Legend of Korra Theory.
Amon is actually the fire bender that killed Mako’s parents. He was upset with himself for accidentally killing them so he found a way to take his own bending and that gave him energy bending powers.
He is doing it to prevent monsters like him from killing people. This fits the general theme of avatar, EVERY big bad guy is a fire bending murderer.
